As expected, some of Philippine movie stars who dreamed of getting a political post reach another supposedly brighter star. They have the edge to win the game because they are popular. Here is the list of some of the stars who jumped to the other end and not failed.

Lani Mercado-Revilla, wife of Senator Bong Revilla who is also currently leading the senatorial poll, is proclaimed winner in her bid as a congresswoman of Bacoor, Cavite. And so are Angelica Jones for the third district of Laguna, Gary Estrada
for the 2nd district of Quezon province.

Maita Gomez, a popular 70s star got the mayoralty position of Pagsanjan, Laguna. Yul Servo is now a councilor, and so is Lou Veloso and Roderick Paulate.

Mon Ilagan, a TV personality from the Kapamilya Network is the newly proclaimed mayor of the Cainta City. Teri Onor, Nora Aunor's infamous impersonator, a board member of Bataan and Batangas also has a bigger star, Christopher de Leon. And another bigger star, Vilma Santos-Recto, who is the ex-wife of Edu Manzano, who ran for Vice President, and now... anyway, that's another story.

Years from now, that is if the Mayan predictions are unauthentic, we would be reminded of 2010 as the year of Earthquake. Why baptize that year with that dishonorable title? Let me count the quakes.

January 12. Five in the afternoon. Haiti experienced a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that killed 222 thousand people.

February 27. Three in the morning. The city of Maule in Chile was struck by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake that instantly killed 432 people.

March 8. Four in the morning. It was Turkey’s time. The province of Elazig is trembled by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake and had 57 fatalities.

Aside from these three major quakes, 2010 experienced 11 more deadly earthquakes ranging from 6.2 to 7.9 magnitude in different parts of the world including Argentina, Japan and Indonesia.

Early this week, Baja California experienced a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that killed 2 innocent lives. And just this morning, Sumatra was hit by a 7.8 earthquake.

Some people are asking, is this a sign of a bigger tragedy? A premonition? But of what? My dear fellow human beings, we just entered the second quarter of the year. And no matter what rocks us in the coming months, don’t ever let your faith shake.

The Prime of Pinoy’s Primetime

Philippine Television continues to dominate the lengthening list of vices of the Filipino people. As soon as the clock strikes 5, people begin to jampack the light rail transits, highway buses and road jeepneys and pedicabs, EDSA turns into a sea of lights even an hour before the sun sets, this if you just try to imagine the view from above; the crowd in Cubao, the honking horns of Taft Avenue, the empty towers of Makati and cab scarcity. And why on earth are you still at the office when Agua Bendita is about swim?

All ages, social classes and sexes (even genders) have been admirers, some are victims, of Philippine Primetime Television. All are hooked, from the so-called tambay sa kanto to La Sallistas and the Atenistas. Everyone has his/her favorite shows. And don’t forget that your lolo will get angry if he did not get even a small dosage of exaggerated news from the leading newscasts. I bet you have already forgotten that there used to be a war between Coke and Pepsi ever since the words kapamilya and kapuso were re-invented.

This is the best communal time of the day, people will agree with that. We relate with all the characters we meet right from the start: Mara, Darna, Santino, etc. We say their dialogues (if the need arises) as if those are ours: “Wala nang kokontra, ako na ang bida.”. We cry and laugh and sometimes talk like our favorite primetime bidas. You can even hear an old man in the street courting a young girl who can be his own daughter: “Oh, I will take you far away from here, just make me your Captain Barbell again.” Using those lines to make-up months before the remake of the famous hero.

And yes, we are already going far away from reality. It’s already distorted, baby. We think we know Santino and call him in times of need. Even at our own home-made fight scenes, we exaggerate the facts to make the event more soap-operaish. But is there something wrong with that, huh? And who cares if you mistake yourself as Marian, Dingdong or Juday, or you think Kim Chiu is one of your exes? Philippine Primetime is part of us. Melodrama is the Filipino life! It could be a fault. If it is, it could be ours or the network stations’ fault. But oh, please, don’t you ever turn off the television!

Summer, Beach, Vacation and El Niño’s Horror

It’s in the leading papers’ headlines this morning: the El Niño. The news came earlier than the anticipated much pleasurable news on what to bring, where to go and what to wear now that we are about to enter this year’s summer. And the news is not at all desirable, I know that’s an understatement, it’s horrific.

It’s as if the Filipino people is about to start shooting a real-life soap opera starring the seasoned season superstar: the El Niño. The camera has already rolled, panning from left to right to cover the intense heat that has already started to dry up farmlands. Some rice farms in Northern Luzon have turned into wastelands as February welcomes its untimely dry season visitor. And who can stop Mother Earth directing the scenes that would lead to the climax? Especially now that another province in Northern Luzon has been placed under a state of calamity due to losses in crops caused by the on-going dry spell.

According to Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), more than 600 barangays in Luzon will experience water shortage this coming months as the water reserve in Angat Dam is expected to fall to a critical level. So, that’s it, guys, El Niño has officially arrived to stay with us this summer and beyond.

It’s now time to pack your bags and get ready for the summer. Just don’t forget your science books, laptop and wi-fi devices so that you can research and review your past lessons on Global Warming while enjoying the heat. And most importantly, check your bus or flight schedules so that you won’t be late! Because we can’t afford to be late this time. We have to plan and do our share.

The War for the Palace

Three months before the Philippine National Election, we can already hear the screams, protests and gunshots, but of course the latter should not be taken literally, hopefully not just for now. Cities all over the country are already being filled with posters, greetings for all occasions (name it, it’s there), that is if the font of the names of candidates is not bigger than their messages. Whether you like it or not, election fever is in the air! And the war, to put it in the words of Tolstoy, has already begun in the hearts of the people.

The most exciting arena to watch out these coming months is of course the presidential race. Noynoy has been leading notches higher in the polls since he officially announced his intention to run as president. After a few months, the war for the highest position has become a boring match. But not until last week when top survey companies released the news that the poll has put Villar just a few steps behind Noynoy. And suddenly, like in a boxing game, the people grew wild, the spotlight opened again to remind our countrymen that this will be one of the most exciting presidential elections in history.

But of course this is not entertainment, this is politics (see the difference, huh?). There should be a thick line separating the two. Because this is all about the future of the Filipino people. This is all about our children and our children’s children. This is about us, about our economy, about nature, about our beliefs, about our future. I know, you can freely add a tune to this paragraph and make it a campaign jingle for your favorite candidate. Just dont forget that you have to dedicate it to the right one. And don’t you ever forget that there are still other presidential candidates that you can choose from aside from Noynoy and Villar. Let’s invite their armies to join the war. Let’s make it a better war. Choose wisely.

We Are The World (Part 2?)

On the night of January 28, 1985, right after the glamour of that year’s American Music Awards, 45 American superstars in the music field gathered together at A&M studio to record what would be one of the most memorable world anthems in recent history, We Are The World.

The song was written by the legendary Michael Jackson and balladeer-song writer Lionel Richie. Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan and Cyndi Lauper were among the stars who participated in the production of this song that was intented to boost USA for Africa charity movement.

The movie awards season has finally arrived. So who’s winning? And who are the ones who will soon regret that they ever existed in Hollywood?

Critics Choice Awards

The Hurt Locker was named best picture on Friday at the Critics' Choice Awards, an event that has a knack of foreshadowing Oscar success. On the other hand, Avatar was named best action movie and picked up five other awards. Jeff Bridges was named best actor for playing a drunken country singer in Crazy Heart. And Meryl Streep tied with Sandra Bullock for the best actress awards. The supporting actor awards went to Austrian actor Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds and comedienne Mo'Nique who played an abusive mother in Precious.

Golden Globe Awards

The science-fiction blockbuster "Avatar" won best drama at the 67th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday and also picked up the directing honour for James Cameron. Winning the dramatic-acting honours were Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side and Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart. The acting prizes for musical and comedy went to superstar and box-office queen Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia and Robert Downey Jr. for Sherlock Holmes.

Avatar, the sci-fi saga created by titanic director James Cameron, continues to reign the box office and earning $352,114,898 in just three weeks. The film shot past $1 billion worldwide, becoming only the fifth movie in history to hit that mark.

It was followed by a Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes which has already earned $138,715,437 since its opening on Christmas Day. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel placed third while It’s Complicated, Meryl Streep’s latest flick closely followed.

2009 Literary Prizes in Review

This year’s Nobel Prize for Literature, the highest honor given to a literary writer, went to Romanian-born German novelist Herta Mueller. It was a well-deserved prize considering the outstanding quality of her works as a poet and essayist noted for depicting the effects of violence, cruelty and terror in Romania. Some of her works have already been translated into English.

Elizabeth Strout won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Olive Kitteridge published by Random House. Lynn Notage’s play entitled Ruined won the same prize in the drama category. W.S. Merwin’s collection of poetry on Sirius, wisdom and old age took home the prize for poetry.
The 2009 Man Asian Literary Prize, an annual literary award for Asian novel unpublished in English, was awarded to Su Tong’s The Boat to Redemption. Filipino writers Eric Gamalinda, Mario Miclat and Edgar Calabia Samar were shortlisted for the said prize.

High Chair issue 12 is a special issue devoted to the Maguindanao Massacre.

We are inviting poets and artists everywhere to submit responses to the following questions:

1. What did you feel upon hearing about the Maguindanao Massacre?

2. How could poetry be written/art be made so that it has value to the event?

We are interested in poems (whether old or new, unpublished or previously published) that offer ways of thinking about terror, horror, and other pertinent ideas/terms.

We are interested in essays and reviews that examine the role and state of Philippine poetry and art in the context of the Maguindanao Massacre.

We recognize the need to engage with the Maguindanao Massacre immediately and to ensure, through an ongoing discussion, that the event remains current and urgent. Thus, High Chair 12 will take on the format of a work in progress, with content uploaded by installment from mid-December to mid-February.

The deadlines for submission for possible inclusion in the four installments of High Chair 12 are: December 10, 2009, December 26, 2009, January 15, 2010, and January 30, 2010.

Philippine PEN National Annual Conference A Success!

PEN, a non-governmental organization in formal consultative relations with UNESCO and Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, held its annual national conference at Bulwagang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining in the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex (CCP) last Saturday, December 5, 2009.

The event was attended by some of the most respected across-all-genres Filipino writers. The theme for this year is “New Writing in the Philippines”. Poet and teacher Marjorie Evasco introduced the keynote speaker for this year, her fellow poet Ricardo De Ungria.

Philippine PEN was established to promote intellectual co-operation and understanding among writers, create a world community of writers and defend literature against the many threats to its survival which the modern world poses.

The Worst Massacre in the Political History of the Philippines

Last November 23, 2009, Monday, the worst man-made tragedy happened in the history of Philippine politics. The location: Ampatuan town in the province of Maguindanao. The victims: women, journalists, civil rights activists, lawyers, innocent witnesses, and yes, even children.

As of today, the death toll has risen to 57. The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines originally estimated that a total of 20 journalists were killed; but The Philippine Daily Inquirer later updated the number of journalists killed to 34. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called the Maguindanao massacre the single deadliest event for journalists in history.

On Thursday, November 26, 2009, Ampatuan Jr. surrendered to his brother Zaldy, was delivered to adviser to the peace process Jesus Dureza, then was flown to General Santos on his way to Manila, where he was taken to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) headquarters.

After the massacre, many Filipinos across the globe wondered how this Neanderthal-like incident could happen in the 21st century. What should we do to make this not happen again? Does the massacre help us quantify the greed of Philippine politicians? Who is the mastermind?

Up to now, every time someone narrates the story to us, we listen intently to look for an explanation that is always and will never be enough.

The Tragic Year and the Filipino People

2009 has not ended yet but it could easily be considered to be one of the most tragic years in the contemporary history of the country. And why not consider it?

It was the year our beloved President Corazon Aquino succumbs to cancer at the age of 76. She is considered to be the mother of democracy who has led the country to freedom through a bloodless revolution that has inspired the world.

It was the year when two of the most respected people in the entertainment industry bid farewell to the stage of their lives. Francis Magalona, the rapper who through his patriotic music sang hope despite his very difficult fight with cancer. And Johnny Delgado, the great character actor who showed the young actors how to give your best to your profession by leaving an array of portrayals on screen that Filipinos would never forget.

And don’t you ever forget not count the two most horrible storms that devastated Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon: Ondoy and Pepeng.

But despite these tragic events, the Filipino people remained composed, relaxed and most importantly, confident to face the challenges of the years to come.

Pacman Wows The World Again

Filipino boxer Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao has once again brought honour to the country as he grabbed his seventh boxing world title last November 14, Saturday (EST).

Millions of Filipino from around the world watched his fight against Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto held at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight 55 seconds into the 12th round, giving Manny Pacquiao a technical knockout and Cotto's WBO welterweight belt before a sold-out crowd.

Pacman is the only boxer who won seven world titles in seven weight divisions in the history of boxing. Many sports critics unanimously claimed that he is one of the greatest boxers of all time. Pacman also previously appeared in the cover of Time Asia Magazine, becoming the first Asian athlete to do so.

When asked who he wants Pacquiao to fight next, Freddie Roach, the boxer’s trainer, said without any hesitations: Floyd Mayweather.

We can NOT underestimate the impact of the spoken word. The age old adage “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” does NOT hold true. In fact, the emotional wounds caused by a carelessly or recklessly spoken word can cause irreparable damage to any sort of relationship. One Millionth English Word

English language now reached its One millionth word! This was made possible by technology advancement and the Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Global Language Monitor (GLM), a US based media Analytics Company tracked down trends in word choices since 2003. “Web 2.0” has been named as the one millionth word because it is widely used by world’s 1.53 English speaking people. GLM said that “web 2.0” gone beyond mere technical jargon to a wider circulation. On a more advanced note, No. 1,000,001 word has been named too- “Financial Tsunami” which means global financial restructuring that seemingly swept out of nowhere , wiping out trillions of dollars of assets, in a matter of months.

Here are other modern words coined out of technological trends and cultural advancement.

No. 999,999: Jai Ho! – A Hindi phrase signifying the joy of victory, used as an exclamation. This gained popularity in the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”.

No. 999,998: NOOb – From the gaming community, a neophyte in playing a particular game; used as in disparaging term.

No. 999,997: Slumdog – a formerly disparaging, now often endearing, comment upon those living in the slums of India.
