One of the most admired novelists of our time has just published a very timely novel tackling one of the most talked about issues of the 21st century: Global Warming. The book, entitled Solar, is published by Doubleday Publishing, Inc.
Solar is a story about an existence in crisis. Not just Beard's, the protagonist of the novel, but also the life of planet Earth. Here, McEwan explores the issues of global warming, the search for new energy sources and the politicization of environmental causes. Beard — bloated, balding and unable to resist the excesses of food and sex — serves as a metaphor for the gluttonous practices that have affected Earth's climate.
The novel proves that even in a literary novel, with its complexity and often times metaphoric language, can rationally tackle a scientific issue such as climate change.
Ian McEwan is a Booker-Prize winning author and screenwriter known for his novels and tales of love, hope, betrayal, self and death such as Amsterdam, Enduring Love, The Cement Garden and short story collections First Love, Last Rites and In Between The Sheets.
